For those that just arrived, Welcome home! BJ and CindyFor those that have been here before welcome back. We are your hosts, BJ 'n Cindy. We own and operate this site as well as the sister sites.

As a retired Marine couple, we know just how new and puzzling, and sometimes how lonely or difficult it can be to find what you need. That is why we created this network and filled it with all kinds of resources to help you find whatever you may need... and to find one another.

So once again Welcome Home...

The pandemic has uprooted much of our daily lives, including how we work and learn. If you have transitioned to remote work as a result of the pandemic, you might be wondering how to make everything go smoothly once your kids begin distance learning. Whether your kids go to school some days of the week or are participating only in remote learning, you’ll need a plan to create an organized and productive environment for work and school. Below, learn about a few things you can do to create a healthy balance at home.

Get Organized

Given how much time you and your kids will be spending at home, it’s important to create a sense of order. Clutter can have a negative impact on everyone’s mood, which is the last thing you need to deal with right now. Decluttering is a great way to create more harmony in your home, but there will also inevitably be a number of items that you don’t want to part with. Instead of trying to stash these items somewhere at home, consider putting them in storage.

Create Dedicated Workspaces

Just as you need a place to do your work, your kids may benefit from having a spot for doing their school work. Creating a homework station is a great way to help your kids focus. The ideal location will be quiet and free from distractions such as TV, games and other hobbies.

As you’re putting together workstations, keep in mind you might be forcing your internet to work harder than usual with each of you online at the same time. According to the Family Handyman, you can get a stronger connection by adjusting your router settings or simply moving your router to a more centralized location. When that doesn’t work, a range extender might do the trick. You may also want to upgrade your internet connection to something that can handle your household’s bandwidth. Internet gaming packages offer plenty of speed and bandwidth, which can be a huge benefit when you’re working from home. Don’t let the “internet gaming” branding fool you — these packages can work for you too!

Avoid Multitasking

Working and watching your kids at the same time is no easy task, but it’s important to avoid doing too many things at once. Numerous studies have shown that multitasking seriously hampers your productivity, which is the last thing you want when you’re wearing so many hats at the same time.

Instead, try other approaches to improve your productivity. For example, you might want to batch tasks to get more done. This simply means sticking to one responsibility at a time and completing it before switching gears. For example, you might find it works well to dedicate a block of time to parenting-related tasks before switching back to work. Using productivity apps and setting work boundaries with your kids can make a difference in your ability to focus as well.

Find Meaningful Ways to End the Day

When you work or study from home, the line between the task at hand and your free time becomes fuzzy. To avoid letting yourself or your kids get burnt out by work or school, spend some time coming up with activities to help you end the day and transition to family time. Leaving the house for a nature walk, backyard meal or to do gardening is a great way to break up the day better.

Don’t be Afraid to Ask for Assistance

Helping your kids with their schoolwork while juggling your own work can feel downright impossible at times, but you don’t need to deal with it all alone. Right now is the perfect time to consider hiring a personal assistant to schedule appointments and handle phone calls or emails. For example, Upwork virtual assistant experts work on a freelance basis, giving you the flexibility you need without the stress of paying employee taxes.

Navigating working from home and remote learning is not an easy task, but it’s likely that this will be the new norm -- at least for a while. Rather than sticking with quick fixes and temporary solutions, it might be worth putting your energy into solutions that work for your family both now and in the long term.
